Influence of Vegetation on Cosmic Ray Neutron Sensor Soil Moisture Measurements

You are here

Project Description:

This study examines the effects of vegetation cover on Cosmic Ray Neutron Sensor (CRNS) neutron flux and soil moisture estimations. The student will investigate the correlation between vegetation parameters and neutron count rates, developing methodologies to account for vegetation-induced variations in soil moisture assessment. * Vegetation can influence CRNS measurements in several ways: * Vegetation contains hydrogen, which can moderate neutrons, affecting the detected neutron flux. * Vegetation can alter soil moisture through evapotranspiration. * Vegetation can create a physical barrier, influencing neutron transport. * This project involves: * Measuring vegetation parameters, such as: * Leaf area index (LAI). * Biomass. * Plant water content. * Analyzing the correlation between vegetation parameters and CRNS neutron counts. * Developing correction factors or models to account for the influence of vegetation on soil moisture estimations.
