Project Description:
In this project the student will be using optical spectroscopic data to study the resolved ionized gas properties of nearby galaxies in the MHONGOOSE or MeerChoirs MeerKAT atomic HI surveys. The student will study H-alpha, [NII] and other lines to study the kinematics, star formation and other properties of the ionized gas. The data will be from SALT observations of the MHONGOOSE galaxies, but can be expanded to use integral field unit (IFU) data of the galaxies from other telescopes. This work will complement the HI studies that will be done on these galaxies in the future.
