Using different Vlsr ’s to obtain better-pointing statistics and source confu- sion insights

Project Description:

When observing with a single-dish telescope, similar to the 26m telescope at the Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory (HartRAO), the standard practice is to take pointing observations to determine if the telescope has been pointing at the correct place. For Spectroscopy, this is done by doing four observations at each of it's half power beam width (HPBW) points, North , South , East, and West of the source and a fifth observation on-source, and using the strongest feature in the spectrum. In this project we will use several velocity feature (not the strongest one) to investigate the pointing of the telescope and to determine whether all the features are part of the same source.
