The effects of microgravity on materials for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) applications - an experimental and computational approach.

You are here

Project Description:

Space weather in low-earth orbit is critical to the endurance of materials used in various regional applications. It is characterised by seven main elements: microgravity, residual atmosphere, high vacuum, atomic oxygen, ultraviolet and ionisation radiation, thermal cycling, and space debris. Each of these elements presents unique challenges and potential risks to materials in space, making our research using the combination of computational physics and experimental techniques for material design and prediction all the more crucial. This project investigates experimental and computational avenues for assessing the effects of microgravity on polymer composites.
